To the best of my knowledge, our starter set ups are the same or similar. The reason I asked for clarification as to where you attached it, was because you said:

If it attaches to the large solenoid stud, it can't be a ground. The huge wire that connects there, also, IS the battery positive cable. A ground connected to that same terminal WOULD be a direct short. I just wanted to help you with the misidentification of that wire. As everyone said above, it's working, and that's the main thing.

We must be talking about the same things, cause you all seem convinced.
I guess I'm describing this wrong, or using the wrong terms.
If I could show you what I'm describing maybe that would be best.
In any case. My starter now works fine. That's all I wanted to convey by bringing this post up again.
sorry for any confusion...

First, I (we) appreciate the report that you got it fixed. Maybe *I* wasn't clear. On my '84, there are two large ring terminals that go onto the large solenoid stud. Unlike later years, the '84 has several wires terminated at the ring terminal that isn't the battery cable. The point was, that nothing conected to the terminal with the battery cable could be a ground. If it were a ground it would cause a dead short.

Glad to hear its working. Good job. Most importantly you tackled it yourself.
