ok- well i just got a cam and head job. Also got a custom chip burned. The exhuast has black smoke and a gas smell coming from it. i didnt have any problems b4 changing anything so i dont think its the sensors. however after idling for a few minutes the check engine light came on. I havent driven the car yet- is it possible that i need to just drive it 30 miles or so (because of the new chip) or should it be good to go?
when we started it there was an exhaust leak b4 the cats. i read that this could cause it to run rich b/c the o2 sensor in the cat would get air and tell it to use more fuel. so this might have been the problem with the check engine light. i will find out tomorrow. sound possible?
Some chip burners don't make any changes at idle and part throttle, they just make changes for WOT -- with a performance cam and speed-density, this causes a rich condition at idle.
I had the same problem on my '92 with my first custom chip. I solved it by having Ed Wright do a chip for me.
