Default Top Speed

Just curious; anyone know what the top speed, wound all the way out of an `87 a4 coupe, with 2:59 gears would be. Got me wondering, since the speedometer only goes to 85

Oh yeah; we are talking stock setup.

The sales lit for my '88 advertises top speed as "150mph plus".

Don't worry about your speedo, the digits will go into three figures rather easily...and quickly if you hammer it at 65mph.

http://corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/1985/85specs.html

Their road test listed the top speed of my '85 at 150MPH... and yes, you're speedo will go past 85MPH. I believe it stops at 255MPH... I have yet to be able to test this theory

For the most part your L98 is the same as mine, you have a few more HP stock, but you also weigh more. So figure on about 150MPH as well.

Mine pulls hard to about 135 mph then I can tell that the majority of my horsepower has been used up, so I can believe that 150 is about right.

I've been to 148mph in my stock engined '85... but came to a slight bend in the road. I still haven't calculated for the change in tire dimensions from stock. Anyhow, this was with 3.07 rear gear, and .68:1 overdrive.

Make sure your tires and air pressures are in perfect order, and your road is carefully studied, and your priorities are completely FUBAR. It's a rough ride, at least with Z51 suspension if the road isn't smooth as glass. Really jerks the wheel around. I took a passenger to verify the speedo... there was NO chance in Hell I was going to take my eyes off the road for a split second.

My 89 would top out at 154 on several occasions. Pretty similar to your car.

This post got me thinking about how long and how much highway is needed to hit top speed (say 150mph), so I started a thread in General on that issue.

Never thought much about it until now while reading another post. I used to make those runs and 4 and 5 in the morning on the beltway as there were no other cars around. I had my headlights up as it was dark. I wonder how much this limited speed with wind resistance. 2 or 3 mph.?
