Okay so I drove the car today to see what would happen. At part throttle and going up a hill it backfired and hesitated like crazy. Once I got on a flat straight away I nailed it to the floor. The secondaries opened up and it ran fine. Good power and no missing. So it only happens at lower rpm and under load. When I say lower rpm I mean 2500-3500. Anything over that and it's fine. I still haven't checked the timing advance I need to get a better timing gun.

OK, here's a stupid question-is your distributor electronic-or does it have points, the allen screw on a distributor with points sets Dwell, and you need a meter that reads Dwell-I'll elaborate more when the question is answered.

Okay now I'm totally confused. I pulled the vacuum line from the vac advance and plugged it. Then I started it up. I put the timing gun to it and it said 8 deg. After it warms up I rev it a little. I see the mechanical advance kick in and the timing mark jumps up. I retard the timing on the distributor down to 6 deg and rev it. It starts popping and sputtering at around 2000 rpm. So I retard it to 4 deg and it pops at idle. Then I advance it to 10 deg and rev it and it pops but at a higher rpm. (Not sure what rpm I didn't look). So as I advance the timing it takes higher rpm to make it pop. Does that mean I need more over all timing to make it stop? I just assumed that the popping was detonation from too high of timing not too low. I will say that without the vac advance the poping was hapening at a lower rpm then with it. So what does it all mean?
