...these answers. With all the gear threads going around lately, I have some questions. Some time back, I purchased 3:54's for my D36. I managed to shread the pinion in half, while on street tires. I then replaced them with the entire 3:73 diff set from Ikerd's(who everyone using them has had good luck with). I am wondering if the gearset in the Ikerd's diff, are any better/stronger/thicker than the Richmond 3:54's I purchased from Summit. I heard someone say that the Ikerd's gears are "specially designed" for the Corvette D36, but would like to know the whole truth. Was my install bad, or were the gears just inferior? Thanks.
You seem to know the 3.54s were Richmond's. They make excellent gears. Maybe Ikerd will tell you whose gears they use. Then you may be in a position to make a judgment. There aren't THAT many companies making gears. In case, if you aren't already aware, anytime a lower ratio is produced, the pinion is smaller (weaker?) than the preceding higher ratio. That isn't by anyone's diabolical design, it's just the nature of the beast.

I was not passing any judgement. I merely want to know if there is indeed any difference between "catalog" D36 gears and the gears that some people say are 'specially" designed for this particular housing.
The only way a gear isn't ""specially designed" for the Corvette D36" is if someone is selling a gear set designed for a different rear, and the seller has adapted it to work in the Dana 36. I am not aware of anyone doing this. Believe me, the 3.54 gears you previously had were, ""specially designed" for the Corvette D36". They weren't designed or cut by Dana, because Dana never made anything lower than 3.31s for the 36. But whoever DID make them, did so with YOUR car in mind. You can only believe just so much hype.

So, it would be your opinion that shreading my pinion in half in a bit over a year could be due to a faulty install as opposed to an inferior product? That's mostly what I am wondering.
