I was trying to remove the passenger side knock sensor so the coolant in the engine could drain. I put the socket on it, and the inside of the sensor would just spin. The outside casing which goes into the block just stayed still. Has this happend to anyone before?
This is gonna take some creativity to get it apart. I am not sure what you should do, specifically, but in general terms, if you can get the old knock sensor separated from the threaded area, you then might be able to get something on it to remove it.
Couldn't you put a set of pliers like the Robogrip or vise grips with curved jaws to wrench it out? I mean, the sensor is toast anyways from the sound of it

The outer part of the sensor is robust enough to support a vice grip. That's what I used to coax one of mine out the first time I did it.
It sounds like you've already broken off the little plastic nipple thingy (acoustic coupler) the electrical connector attaches to, so it doesn't matter how you get it off at this point.
When you install the new sensor, be sure and torque it in at 15 lbs. and do NOT use any thread compound or plumber's tape on the sensor. The orange coating that comes on there is all you'll need.
