I have had my 1985 for 2 years now and i am always coming across problems that baffle me. I was hoping someone could troubleshoot a problem i am having.
Got in the car last weekend and turned the key to start the car. The car has always fired up really quick and this time was no different. The cars starts and idles really well for about 2 to 3 seconds and then just putters out. I am thinking it may be something electrical or computer related.. only because it seems to stall when the idle kicks down after intial start-up. If it was a fuel pressure problem or fuel pump related wouldn't the car run crappy all the time if it even started...Any ideas?
Sounds like your IAC (idle air control) is on its way out. Its the small protruding piece off the bottom of the throttle body. I bought a new one to be replaced this winter. When mine went on the fritz, I gave it a few taps with a rubber mallet, has worked since. Thats not really a fix, but an indicator that the IAC is your problem.
The other possibility is that there is an oil pressure switch in the top of the block behind the distributor that, when closed, completes the circuit that supplies voltage to the fuel pump. What happens is when you turn the key on the fuel pump is energized for 2-4 seconds in order to pressurize the fuel rails which allows the engine to start. But then oil pressure is needed to close that switch in order to keep the fuel pump running after that. The switch could be bad, or the electrical connection is loose or got knocked off. I believe it has two large orange wires running to it.
