I am going to replace my rear pads. My Haynes manual isn't real clear about disabling the parking brake automatic adjuster. Do I have to do it just to replace pads or only if I am taking caliper completely off to rebuild? I was an idiot on my last post (missing a/c condenser)I didn't realize a condenser and radiator looked so much alike. Any suggestions on types of pads I would need one grade above average. Thanks
Jack:
You can change the bads without messing with the parking brake. I don'y know what kind of driving you are planning, I used the lifetime warranty pads from AutoZone.
I have a '90 model and replaced the rear pads last weekend. I didn't have to disassemble the parking brake. The one bolt on the top of the caliper was all I removed, then the caliper swung down to get to the pads.
I used AutoZone Performance-Friction z-rated pads @ $69.99
Don't forget to tourque the wheels, 100 ft-lbs
My front stock GM pads throw off more dust the the new rear PF pads. But the PF pads grip big time and I noticed much better braking. They do occasionally squeal, but it is rare, usually after braking a lot. BTW, I ordered mine off of autozone's web site for those not near an autozone. I have to order fronts now to replace the lousy GM pads (well at least compared to the PF).
Not a hard Job! My rears wore out first. Replaced fronts and backs at the same time. Used Wagner semi metallics. Life time warranty. No more black dust on the wheels.Stops much better.
