Why do you say that? If it is engineered for your transmission, ie. Dextron II etc. why do you feel it is not good to use it. I use it since it can stand high temps. better then mineral based fluids without breaking down.

As long as you use the recommended transmission fluid type, then either mineral based or synthetic should be fine. Pick a Brand that you trust that is available in your area. You will be happy with 93 Ragtop's recommendation of Mobil . I agree that synthetics should give a longer service interval because of their ability to withstand more heat. At the margin their ability to flow better in cold temperatures and their resistance to shear thinning may support the claim that they are "better" for your transmission Because most wear happens when the fluid fails to properly lubricate, then a synthetic oil that has a broader operating range promotes "better lubrication".
Red L98- I find it strange that someone can make a statement like you made and not give one idea or reason to support it.
As far as I am concerned synthetic Mobil 1 ATF is a much better ATF. I first realized this when if fixed the boiling over of the ATF in my Camaro when it got very hot. Using the Mobil 1 synthetic the boiling and foaming stopped. I use it in my 4+3 OD unit and it my 95 A4. According to Jeep and Mobil 1 it should not be used in Jeeps or Chrysler cars. Mobil says it is fine for GM.

Just for your infomation, Redline makes a type 7176 fluid. I purchased it for a dodge intrepid my wife used to own about 3 years ago. Since then we have sold it to a friend who is still driving it. The orig. transmission failed at 41,000 miles. It was rebuilt, and with about 85,000 miles I had it flushed and refilled with the redline. It now has 150,000 miles on the car (about 110,000 on the trans rebuild) and is still running fine.
