The front of my 84 squeeks terribly. My mechanic tells me that the front spring has rubber bushings at the center of the car between the front spring and the frame and that is the problem. He says that the bushings are part of the spring and that the spring must be replaced. Anyone know anything about this or how to contact GM about this?

I think he's full of **it.
The spring has rubber padding under the ends, where it sticks into the control arms. The pivots in the center, are exactly that, pivots. An aluminum piece and a nylon piece that pivot against each other. Your squeak is probably any number of the control arm bushings, or under the spring pad ends. I still haven't found mine, but a full bushing replacement is in my near future.
Sounds like old control rod bushings. With age they get hard and tend to crack and lose there ability to flex. A kit can be purchased either at a parts store or on the internet (Ebay). Its a time consuming procedure but can be done by us.
I did the suspension rebuild on my 84 in increments, over a couple of months. I had the same squeak / groan in the front end you have. I figured as I replaced bushings, ball joints, etc it would eventually go away. I hit the jackpot on the front swaybar. The bushings were gone, and it was metal to metal.
Check your swaybar bushings (the end links on the lower control arm) before doing anything. It's a cheap, easy fix.
I removed my sway bar a couple of years ago, when I swapped out the steering rack. My groans remained. They disappeared when I did all the suspension bushings, this spring.
Mine did this and it was the sway bar bushings. To check spray them with some wd 40 and see if it stops.
Thanks for info. Mine is the sway bar also. Did you replace the bushings and, if so, is the sway bar under tension when the wheels are supported? I would hate to take out the bolts and have it jump at me. Tom B
After WD40 on the sway bar bushings, noise stops for a short distance. Looks like I need to replace. Is the sway bar under tension when the wheels are supported so that the sway bar can be removed and new bushings put in with the bar taking my head off when I undo the bolts? Tom B.
