How much HP would the Hot Cam add to an LT4 engine? What improvement would there be in the 1/4 mile? Do the springs & lifters need to be replaced? How much is it for the kit (i.e. whatever is required - cam, springs, lifters, etc.). My LT4 is bone stock, should I consider other mods before going to this one?

My GS was completely stock except for the Hot Cam when I bought it. It had been dynoed before and after the cam pulling 294RWHP before and 326RWHP after. I've since added the Corsa and K&N, but it hasn't been back to the dyno (not that I would expect big gains from these last two items). I doubt I'll do much more to the car, but I'm guessing I can get a little more out of the cam if I free things up on the intake or exhaust side. I might add a 52mm TB and/or shorty headers at some point, I'm just not sure if I can justify the expense.

Since the cam was already installed, I can't answer any of your installation questions. And I've never had it down the 1/4 mile.

Hope this helps!

What about the ZZ-9 cam from TPIS or any other of the cams featured at their website:
http://www.tpis.com/pg13-16.html. Or would the LT-4 hot cam be better? Does that kit come with roller rockers and push rods? Maybe thats the 350 hot cam kit I'm thinking about from GM Performance.

I have the Hot cam and I love it. Sorry, I can't give you "before and after" dyno numbers, but it is a nice improvement. As far as the ZZ9, you would be paying almost twice as much for a smaller cam. I have heard good things about it, but for the price I can get the Hot cam and a few other little things to go with it. Just my opinion.

My Hot cam is in the mail and on the way. I had debated between Lingenfelters cam and the hot cam. At over $100 less I went with the hot cam and think Im gonna be pretty happy. I think youll need a new set of springs and would suggest getting 1.6 rockers as well. You can get cheap springs and rockers for $30 and $50-80 respectively, and could spend nearly $500 on the springs and rockers if you go all out. My 2 Cents, get the $500 LT4 Hot cam kit, comes with the cam, springs and rockers along with everything else youll need.

The LT4 has 1.6 roller rockers and the correct springs from the factory should be able to get away with just buying the cam.

I always suggest changing the stock springs when going with a larger cam- just to be safe. My stock LT1 springs started getting weak with the stock cam. Didn't notice it until after I made several trips down the track and the motor was good and warm, then the valves started to float at high rpms. Really a cheap investment.

Doc Doom,

What springs would you suggest then for the LT4 w/ a hotcam.

Thanks

Neal

Neal,

I used the springs in the Hot cam kit and was very pleased with them. I don't know, are they the same springs that came stock on an LT4? I didn't think so because the cam in the stock LT4 is very similar(don't have the specs handy) in lift and duration to the LT1 cam so I assumed they used the same springs as the LT1, but I may be wrong. Even so, after putting 60,000+ miles on the motor and the stock springs plus installing a larger cam, I would go with the springs that the manufacturer recommends for that cam- especially if you venture to the track. Just my opinion.

Polar LT4,

I see you are from Middletown, OH. I did a lot of growing up there. In fact, my mother and her side of the family still lives there. I come up to visit 4-5 times a year. Nice in the Summer, but not in the winter! Good luck with the cam.

Dr. Doom,

The springs are different between the LT1 & 4

85 lbs. (38.6 kg.) Seated for the LT1
GM Part# 10206040

100 lbs. (45.4 kg.) Seated for the LT4
GM Part# 12551483

I pulled these from the LT4 web site.

Anyone know what the spring PN is that comes with the Hot cam kit ????

Edited: found them
valve springs GM# 12551483 (with the kit)

so they are the same as the factory LT4 springs!!!!

Neal

Imagine that. I guess we learned something today. I didn't know. I race my car a good bit, so whenever I change cams, I usually change the springs as well.
