BUT, all knock sensors are NOT created equal. you must get a V8 knock sensor one for a 4 or 6 is not the same. have the parts guy @ NAPA look up one for a 91 Camaro L98 (Or vette will probably work as well), this is what I am running & it seems to work very well for me (7730, super ram, roller motor). it does not seem to be overy sensitive or not sensitive enough.
I just did the conversion. I have a way where you can retain the L98 knock senser with the 7730 ECM. All you need is a 4.3K resistor and the pin changes I have. Also, use the MAF output wire for your MAP signal. I also used my TPS for my 5v and ground for the MAP. This way there is no wires pulled through the dash.
Yes a knock sensor is (when push comes to shove) nothing but a microphone (sp), but it is a tuned one. the issue here is how much noise does an engine make, what are the charicteristics of the block, what valve train does it have, etc, etc, etc. all these items dictate which sensor it uses. ever think about why there are not a TON of aftermarket knock senors on the market? why dont any of the big shops use them, as a primary source, for tuning? even with all the $$$ that the Big mfg's spend modeling & testing they are still designed as backups, to the tuning that they do to the motor before they ship a prom.
My suggestion, just get the right one & call it a day. while you are there @ the NAPA, ask the guy if he has a catalog, of ignition components. look @ the back where it shows you the pictures of them w/the apps for each. There are a ton of them, for good reason.
