Before going to the drag strip last night, L98Terror checked the timing on my car. It was at -4 degrees. Oook.... so we set it to 8 degrees as I have heard that was the optimal stock L98 setting a few times. Got detonation with that, so set it to 6 and all felt good.
Any ideas what sort of power robbing that -4 might of been doing?
The other thing is that last night was my first time not using street tires, so I'm still getting used to how to launch and stuff. Not seriously consistent last night.
In the olden days when I crewed for a local hot rodder (68 Firebird) we used to retard the timing when we got to the track. Rule of thumb was retarded time-better acceleration, advanced timing better top end.
We also played with the dwell, but I don't remember which way went better.
We had the track record for our class for a couple of years. I thought I'd never get back into it, till my wife made me buy this damn Vette (now that old obsession is creeping back).
Scrop, once you get dialed in with your new setup you can change timing and find out what your particular engine "wants". And of course, though your timing curve stays the same shape, you are shifting it with base changes. I was told that I needed a chip to change my timing curve and eliminate "knock counts" but haven't addressed that issue yet.
I saw in OFF TOPIC you SPANKED that 'Stang! . What tires did you end up using? Someone should have mentioned to you NOT to launch that low(2600) or it'd bog. 'Tis ok..you'll get it. Once the cam/heads go on you'll need a sticky tire for certain.
Just wondering...if youre running a aftermarket chip it has a more aggressive timing curve at WOT right?
But its based on you leaving the timing in the stock location..could advancing it make it ping then?
When I had a ADS chip(came with the car when I bought it), it would ping at WOT if the timing was set around 8 degrees..I have the stock chip(GM upgraded for the 86) back in the car and I can advance it to 9-10 now with no problems.
Anyone know for certain if a chip(like hypertech, ads, etc) can cause too much advance timing for 8 degrees?

My friend had a 86 Mustang 5.0, he had car worked on they set his timing to 4 degrees, (factory spec is 10). He lost a street race to his neighbor Mustang by 3 cars. We wne over his car and found the timing, we set his timing to 13 degrees (standard 5.0 practice), he beat his neigher by 1/2 car. So for a 5.0 it helped quite a bit...
TO Bill's86Coupe, Was there an upgrade stock chip from GM for the 86???? If so, where would one obtain it?? Thanks[/color]
GM sells the prom..go see your local GM dealer..the proms are "improved" since when they first came out, mostly driveability and etc.My engine idles alot better now, especially under load like when you have the a/c on etc. With a OLD stock chip, it would idle very low and stumble sometimes under load.
When you go buy a prom, theres usually one part number for your year, engine, tranny and gear ratio.
It may not say it, but all the proms they sell now are revised or upgraded.
I have a little engine work done so I think that might be why I can advance my timing a litle more over stock then just the chip alone...just a guess, not a fact I know.
