I was out on a long drive today in my 86 and about 2 hours into the trip, my SES light came on. After I got to my destination and let the car sit for a couple hours, it went off until the way home... came back on and now its staying on. I pulled the codes and got a 32 and 34. I think 32 is EGR but unsure about 34... I did add an open air filter lid and a K&N air filter before I set out on the trip.
Are either of these codes harmful and is there a way to rest the ECM to see which codes come back? The car seems to be running great, just the annoying light.
On a side note... is ANYTHING in these cars easy to get at?? The tail light bulb looks as its going to be a chore from hell to replace!

Well Jim, I wouldn't quite say harmful, but all codes should be taken a look at if they come back after you clear them. To clear them, disconnect the negative battery cable (5/16" boxend wrench works best) for about 10 seconds. Then drive the car over 30 mph for a while. This will let the car experience all modes of operation from idle to part throttle and make sure it runs for at least 6 minutes after getting up to temp. Your computer will 'relearn' a certain amount during this time. I use the term loosly because it really doesn't learn jack squat, it just reads the O2 voltage and varies fuel accordingly.

My 86 was doing that! It was the EGR temperature switch. It's located in the top of the EGR tube that goes over the right valve cover. I think it was $12.00 at a GM dealer. It would only come on after 10 or 15 minutes of driving over 45 mph.
It's a ceaply made switch, and easily replaceable, the wire connector is hard to reach though. Much easier with the distributor cap removed.
Ok, I reset the ECM by pulling the neg battery cable, let it sit off for a few minutes and restarted the car. It still threw the code 34 almost instantly.
looks as if 34 is a MAF code... a few articles on here referes to relays for these.. does anyone know where they are located and a GM part number?

They are located behind the battery on the firewall. I also had trouble with them, they should be replaced as a set. In my case it was an intermitent rough running condition. It was cured with replacement of the MAF power and burn off relays. I don't remember how much they cost,but it was not expensive.
The part numbers have changed several times, so a check of the latest numbers may be needed.
The '86 takes two different relays, the burnoff relay is 10094701 and the power relay is 10067925. These were taken from TSB 87-270 - the parts manual may not have the right numbers listed, or only a single number which can cause a whole separate set of problems from what I've heard.

Thanks everyone. I've got the car in the shop having other work done (Water pump, yay.. wish I had my own garage!) and had them through a diag on it.. they said the MAF itself is bad, but I'm not buying that yet... I'll put the relays in 1st.
I have pictures sitting on the camera, just need to get them developed.
Ok, got the car back from the shop and did some investgating on the MAF problem... one of the wires in the center of the MAF is broken, so it does need to be replaced. I picked up the 2 relays just because and I noticed the 2 I have now are both indeed the same part number. I'm going to swap them out when I pick up the MAF, but one stupid question.. which plug is the burn and which is power?
Also.. where is a reasonable place to get the MAF from?

My helms manual shows the location on the firewall behind the battery but labels both as "burn off" relays. No help there. I looked at the relays on my car. I could only get a number off the one parallel to the firewall 14078907 - not one of the choices unless the original number has been superceded.
One way to tell is with a voltmeter. "B" is always grounded on the power relay, but not on the burnoff relay unless it is in a burnoff cycle. "C" is always 12v on the burnoff relay, but only when the fuel pump is running on the power relay.
There may be something with the wire colors, too.
I have the pair of relays on order, so I need to know also. If you find out for certain, please get back to me.
