i sometimes get a high pitched whining when i turn to the right or left going real slow beginning to get worse but I don't notice any malfultions any ideas
thanks
Power steering pump is a good guess...BUT I had this problem and it was time to change the differential rear end oil/fluid.
I really thought it was my power steering...sounded just like a bad pump to me when driving and taking turns at slow speeds..
do some figure 8's in a parking lot..if it squeals or howls, its more then likely the rear end fluid...changing the fluid and additive will quiet it down.
BUT Do check the power steering fluid..be sure its full and clean...if its black and gunky, or metallic and gritty, flush the system and bleed the air out and test it.
Also,With the car running, but not moving, have someone turn the steering wheel lock to lock several times and hold it for a few moments when the wheel is fully turned and listen to the power steering pump and see if its whining.
Let us know what you find.
thanks for the response I checked the power sterring fluid and it looks fine and is full I was kinda thinking about the wheel bearings but what you say about he differential makes a lot of sense I will change the fluid and let you know what I found out
Thanks again

I had this problem on my '95. I was able to solve the problem by sucking some of the fluid out and adding the GM Positraction additive. I am planning on changing the fluid tomorrow or next weekend.
ive had the same prob for awhile now. i changed power steering fluid and that didnt help. sounds like the rear end change is next, how much additive should i put in?

Let me know if this works. I have a similar problem with my car...only if I recall it only happens when I turn right...and it's more of a rubbing sound vs. a whine (a whine to me is like a gear drive sound). Anyway, I thought it was a wheel bearing also.....but I have put off changing it, since it's been doing it for ages and everything seems to be working fine.
I had the same problem when I purchased my 86. The previous owner had driven the car very little (3000 miles in 4 years). After driving it for awhile it stopped making the noise. I think it had been driven so little that the posi clutches had dried out. I will be changing the fluid soon, two bottles of the GM additive is in order.
