The 85' runs great but i got a check engine light.
Pulled it up and found them to be a 42, and 43.
I know the 43 is going on another thread but i just have a ? about both the codes. The problem seems to be that there is somthing grounded.( thats whats said in the manual that i got the cods outa)
What could be grounded?
the 43 is an esc electronic spark controller. And the 42 is a EST electronic spark timing.
Both these have somthing to do with the ignition system.
After i got the codes i cleared them by disconecting the batery. I drove aroung for about and hour and i got no codes. So im wondering if it could be a bad ground.
The fix for these codes that my book sais is to check grounds/ connection/ replace. The whole ignition system is new just got done with an engine build so everything is new from that. the sensors to the ecm. So if its a ground where? or dose this sound right?
When the check engine light came on the car sounded like it was missing. And it lost power.
The 42 means it's running on timing built into the module and that the ECM isn't controlling timing. That's what happens when you disconnect the timing or black tan wire near the brake booster, to set base timing. You take ECM control out of it, so check that wire and connector first. If it's good, look at the white wire to/from the module - that's the ESC pulse or ground from the ECM which advances/retards timing.
43 is usually no signal from the knock sensor. Check that connector - it's gets brittle with age and it's close to the right header.
The white wire for the ecm your talking about the white wire in the 4 wire weather pack type connector behind the distributor?
I think your on about the ect? connector at the booster because i would intermintently get the 42code. Ever since i bought the car and when i first did time it the connector had a bunch of electrical tape around it. So thats probaly it.
Thanks
Yes, the white wire is in the distributor harness. Runs to ECM Pin D4. With the ECM disconnected, wire should read less than 1000 ohms (completed circuit). However, with the tan black wire taped up at the connector, I'd suspect that first.
