Alright... I'm confused... I called a local (reputable) speed shop in St. Louis MO that said it would be $1400 to set up the rear with 4:10's. That is the reason I opted not to get gears. I know TPIS sells the gears for $475... is there a difference in what I wanted vs. what you guys are discussing? I would have delivered the rear end (whole batwing) and reinstalled it myself.
FYI ~ I called some other shops that were around $1100-$1200 for the same thing, but I've heard some stories about them also.
Or they just didn't really want the job. Do these outfits do gear work? Or would they have to farm it out. Most general repair shops don't perform gear work, in house. Keep calling, and make sure you communicate well, with what you want from them. You carry in the diff? Who supplies the gears? Is a case needed? Bearings? Who supplies? Make things extra clear as to what you want or need, and they understand and quote accordingly.
I will pull the Dana 44 off of the car and take it to someone for 3.54's to be installed what cost should I expect for the install only?
TIA
Earlier this year I paid $600 for a local corvette-speciality shop to remove the diff', swap the gears (that I had bought elsewhere), rebuild the posi unit and then reinstall the whole thing. The only injury I risked was the posibility of a vicious check-writing sprain - Which I avoided by using my check-card.
And again, that was a corvette-speciality shop (Tidewater Corvettes). They had to reposition the shimms 5 times (from what they tell me) but they worked into the price the time it would take to do it right, so there was no suprise at the end. I was quoted $600, and I paid $600. Anybody who quotes you $1400.00 doesn't want your business.

You got a bargain. I phoned around the San Diego area last year for the same service (drive the car in, drive the car out) and the normal price was $1200. They supplied everything, including all labor.

That's who quoted me the $1400!!! I originally thought to take it to Bier Brothers but my neighbor had his 10 bolt set up by them and it whines pretty bad. Where did you get the gears from? Maybe I need to call First Capital back and clarify my situation...

Larry, I think here in So. Cal prices are way higher then anywhere else.
I paid $1100, and I bought the gears and bearings.
I brought the car and the gears to the shop and they did it.
That is the going rate with all of the tuners here.
If you want them to supply everything be ready to pay $1500.
I just set mine up myself and it was a pain in the azz! I had to make a custom preload pinion shim, and trial fit it SEVERAL times before it was right. The pinion nut has to be torqued to 200ft-lbs with the proper preload. The shim alone cost me 60.00 bucks. So do remember you get what you pay for. There was no crush sleeve on my d44 and I wanted mine perfect. Trust me you don't want a half *** job and have something come apart when you are going very fast!
Hey Buddy,
Ikerds is OK in my book. They built the rear end for my 86.Except for a front seal that leaked in about a year of use(an easy fix),there were no other problems with the rear end work. They seem to know the C4 rear ends very well. You can usually see them at a Big car show or Vette show with their parts and display.Heck theyre not too far from Indy either to go visit.
Good Luck and Ill be in touch soon.
