Loose distributor cap connection
So I snuck out to the parking structure this late afternoon to take a quick look under the hood on why my car revved funny a couple of times this morning on the freeway, and stalled once in stop and go traffic. I knew that one of the two connectors that go to the cap/rotor is broken...meaning it doesn't "click" onto it's connection. Anyways, I checked it and I pushed it up a good 1/4 inch. Hopefully it will stay. Any chance this was the cause of my stall and weird rpms? And do they make replacement connectors?

There are three plugs that plug into the distributor cap. The closest to the body has 3 wires in one connector. There are two other wires, each with a single plug, that attach just outboard of the three wire connector. The cap is marked as to what they are. If memory serves me, the one with the fat (larger) wire (pink) goes toward the firewall. Either way, the cap labels it "Bat". It is the 12 volts that run the ignition. Remove that wire and the engine quits. If it has an intermittent connection it could act as you describe. The other, skinnier, white, wire, plugs in below the marking "Tach". It connects to the tach filter, and would NOT affect how the car runs.
I've never tried to buy one, but I would imagine the connectors are available. Every GM HEI distributor ever built uses the same connectors.
