Beginning Jan. 1, 2005, a roll bar and an SFI 16.1 driver-restraint system will be mandatory on any vehicle running 11.49 or quicker and for convertibles running 13.49 or quicker. An SFI 3.2A/1 jacket will be mandatory for all drivers in vehicles running between 10.00 to 11.49 seconds. On any car running 11.49 or quicker, a flywheel and clutch meeting SFI Spec 1.1 or 1.2 and a flywheel shield meeting SFI Spec 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, or 9.1 will be mandatory. A driveshaft loop will be required on all cars running 13.99 or quicker and utilizing slicks, except vehicles equipped with street tires running 11.49 or slower.
I was going to cage the vette this winter and now I guess I don't have to.

I helped run a motocross track for over 10 years and all tracks can make their own rules. I hope the NHRA tacks around here change so I can run my chevelle at them.
cool I don't need one for my vette, I am assuming it will run mid 13's, but it is a vert.
my local track let me run multiple 11.8 runs in my vert with no roll bar. then someone complained that i wasnt legal and they said no more until a had a cage. so i made some phonecalls to nhra and they said "it is understood that a convertable that has the bolt on hard top securly in place will be considered in a coupe classification. and if your local track will agree you can run to 11.99" .
with this new 11.49 rule, depending on your local tracks decision, like mojo said, you will be able to run 11.49 in a vert with a bolt on hardtop.
96zride... if your local track is strick they will not let you run a mid 13 in vert. but i would talk to them and see if they know about the hardtop rule. if they do and will let you run with a hard top then your good to at least 12.0. personally id rather have a hardtop then a cage for my vert........
Hey Rich, are there any other stipulations on this rule change? I saw something about this a while back and if I remember correctly there were a bunch of things tied to it, the battery had to be in the stock location was one I remember seeing.

I think you are thinking of the pure stock rule. The new rule is 11.499 or lower before you will need a cage.
Unfrortunately most tracks around here classify a removable top car (targa or TTop) as a convertible.
I'm still waiting on NHRA to get back to me regarding their standpoing. I know as of June, TTops were still considered hardtops by their classifications.

Of course I don't know about YOUR track, but that was a rumor that circulated 6 months or so, ago. NHRA clarified that "T" tops and targas were "hard tops".
The "new" roll bar rule becomes effective January 1st, 2005. There are no new requirements, The roll bar, harness, and jacket are now needed at 11.49, instead of 11.99. For convertibles the requirement dropped from 13.99 to 13.49. I have heard of no changes the "Pure Stock", Street Legal segment rules.
