Default Surging Idle....(Cold)

Hey guys, my 1988 just recently started suffering from a surging idle when cold. It is most pronounced in Park and Neutral, but does still exist when in gear; just harder to feel. It usually idles right at 700-800, but now while cold it will bounce from 800 up to 1100. It is almost non-existant once warmed up, but it can still feel it slightly once warm, just much more pronounced when cold. Any thoughts on where i should look first? The plugs all look good and in about the same condition. Perhaps they haven't been affected yet since this just started happening...I'm also thinking IAC maybe? I also cleaned the throttle blades to no avail; visually checked MAF. Thanks for your time guys!

I was kind of thinking this too, Bogus. Do you think just a good cleaning is in order, or replace it? Not a code to be found btw..

That seems more like a warm Idle issue... When your car is warm does the idle smooth out at all or does it stay the same?

If it smooths out, I would think maybe somethings up with the cold start injector...

It does smooth out quite a bit when warm

I say that because usually a surging Idle when warm shows a bad IAC...

On my '85, it idled steady when it was cold- then when it warmed up I had an idle surge from 600-900rpm's. I replaced the IAC (new one from autozone for 30 bucks), and it cured that problem...

You're problem just doesn't sound like an IAC...
I've been wrong before, so just take this as my opinion...
I wouldn't know how to check a cold start injector anyway...

I've got the same problem as you do. I put in a new IAC and got all new gaskets for the TB and yet the problem is still there.

Must be a New York thing...lol. Thanks a million for the heads up; i'll try cleaning mine first. I don't mind buying nice new parts, just don't like replacing parts needlessly. (I try not to be a "parts changer")

Like I said, I dont think the IAC is your problem...
Do you have a manual? Or can you get a look at one?

Maybe if i go to the library Mickey. I had an 85 manual but got rid of it.....Maybe (i doubt it lol) the cold start injector is easy to remove/inspect/clean.

I think the cold start injector is right on the plenum. I have a manual for an 87... upon referring to it, the cold start injector is on one of the intake runners, on the back passengers side. At least that's how it kinda looks in the horrible pics!

Bogus,

not sure right now, (car isn't near me) But i think it is located on the left side runner. Does the manual give any troubleshooting tips for the cold start? Maintainance schedule? Thanks for your help!
