will a super ram from a L98 camaro fit my 84 L83? and if so, what would be needed to make the swap? they are both normal sbc's right? just different horspower ratings.
The swap won't be a simple bolt-on. You'll probably have to convert to a newer ecu which can control the injectors along with its' wiring harness. You might also have to add a MAF sensor as well. You'll obviously need the injectors. You'll also need a L98 fuel pump since your fuel pump is lower pressure. Aside from those main issues, that should be it. Hopefully someone who knows more about the earlier swaps will help you out more.
If you're a real DIY kind of guy, you might want to look at a standalone injection setup like the MegaSquirt to control your injectors. That would make a lot of things simpler, but you'd have to tune it yourself.
ive owned both L98 and L83 the power difference stock is almost a good second in 1/4 and 5-7mph.but if your looking for stock L98 power then mod the crossfire.it doesn't take much to make it breath.the difference in TPI's is the potential they have due to the muli-port injection.we work with 2 inj. on the crossfire rather than everyone elses 8 or 16for those ZR1 guys. if you want a little more power stick with the xfire and mod it. tell us your goals with the vette too! good luck.

A conversion from CFI to TPI is a waste of time and money, but a Super Ram is a whole different subject. As mentioned above, the ECM, wiring harness and fuel pump will need to be matched to the port injection. What year is the Camaro? Not all "normal SBCs" are the same in later years. If the Camaro has iron heads, chances are the manifold bolts are vertical, rather than angled like "normal SBCs". You should be able to modify the manifold, but a word to the wise... You might have to convert to L98 accessories to get everything to fit. Little things like the EGR, if you plan to keep it, will have to be dealt with. It is a do-able, worthwhile, project, but it may get more complicated than it first seems. I imagine you HAVE the SR, and money is a consideration. Before you're done, the stand alone conversion, suggested above, may end up looking pretty good.
thanks for the info guys. gonna go with the stand alone engine harness, computer, and maf offered by comp cams. should'nt be too bad a swap.
I believe the setup is out of an 87-88 camaro. iron heads. My intentions are to put a fast-burn 385 crate motor in because the L83 thats in it is pretty tired. not really looking to do much drag racing, but i do autocross occasionally and i understand that the super ram works VERY well for this type of application ( lots of torque)
the thing that concerned me the most about the swap was the electronics part of it, and making it work with the 84's computer system.
