Default Installed Edelbrock timing chain cover - Help

I just installed a new front cover on an 86 due to the incompetence of the previous owner.(Tried to pull the OEM front cover without dropping the oil pan and tore the lip off the front cover.) Now I cant get the oil pan back on.
Heres the problem:
The oil pan gasket (fel-pro OS 34500R {one peice gasket}) does not allow the oil pan to seat against the case at the front of the motor. It is binding at the front cover lip even after the gasket is pushed all the way into the channel of the lip. I bought a die-cast front cover so dimensionally it cant be wrong and I've verified with Edelbrock that its the correct application.
I checked with Fel-Pro (FM) and they say the gasket is right for my year vehicle.

Should the pan gasket be a four (4) peice gasket on this year vehicle?

I've checked everything else and cant figure it out

Sounds like somthing else is going on here..
When I re-did mine, I used the 4 piece set but
stayed with the stock cover and pan.. It bound
up a little bit so I bent the double lip on the
cover to get it to fit. If yours is die cast then there
wont be any room to "bend" the lips(I assume)..
Try getting it on with out the gaskets and see if that
gives you a better idea of where its hanging up..

Good Luck

Yea thanks. I dont know whats going on either. Is yours an 86 or an earlier model?
I'm going to try to mic the gap at the front tonight without the gasket in place. Hopefully that will tell me something.

I installed the Fel-pro one-piece on my early 86, then re-installed it on a 91 motor with LT1 pan. Fit fine both times. I'm having trouble picturing what is binding where, though.

incidently, I had no problems removing the timing cover w/out dropping the pan. Putting it back ON, though, was a different story.

The only thing I can think of is that the rubber part of the 4 piece that sits in the timing cover groove is shifting during the reinstall.

I've heard of people removing the timing cover with the pan on, but I can't see how without mangling it. Dropping the pan isn't difficult, so I can't see why someone would take a shortcut here.

Any chance there's some RTV or something keeping the rubber part from seating? Mine went right back on with no problems when I did my timing chain.

It pulled right off with no problem. I didn't drop the pan at first because the studs holding the oil cooler lines had loosened and it was impossible to take them off without a lift and more tools than I own. The pan would drop about half an inch and then hang up.

I wound up cutting one of the brackets holding the coolant lines on so I could eventually drop the pan. It wasn't pretty.

On my 86 I'm running the one piece pan gasket with stock timing cover and have had the pan and timing chain cover off and on a few times with no problem. I reused the same gasket each time.

I'd try doing a trial fit without the gasket in place to see if the problem still exists.
