Default Dash and Diacom Disagree on Temp

The dash in my 88 shows about 185 and I believe that to be correct for many reasons, including the oil temperature reading. The engine coolant is certainly not the 250 degrees shown by the Diacom display. Why would they differ? More importantly, can I be certain that the car's computer understands the temperature to be 185, not 250?

Default 2 sensors

The ECM and dash each use a different coolant temperature sensor. My first guess is the one used with the ECM has a problem. The ECM does think it's 250.

Yep, 2 different coolant sensors. I'd be replacing the one diacom is seeing.

I've written the helpful members but will post the question here in case they don't get my message. Where is the second coolant sensor? I understand that there is one at the front of the intake manifold and I did replace the switch that turns on the fan, but I don't know about another coolant temp sensor and my book only shows the one. Where would I find the second. Thanks.

The one at the front of the intake manifold is the one diacom sees.

On the front of your intake manifold there are two sensors. The one that does NOT have the injector style connector is the coolant sensor for the ECM.

Thanks.

I called the Chevy parts man and he seemed to know which was which. I'm likely optomistic but I'm hoping for a significant improvement. The car has typically run better while warming up than when up to operating temperature.
