I've got an 84 that will start and run fine, but last night when I got home I turned the ignition off and pulled the key out but the car kept running. I tried a few times to get it off but couldn't. With the door open and the key in the off position it buzzes just as it would if the car were off. I pulled the fuse to shut it off, but the dashboard stayed on as if the car were running still. I ended up disconnecting the battery. I'm not a mechanic but I'm able to follow directions well, the problem is I can't find any reference to something like this. I'm sure someone has some suggestions/thoughts/ideas or has had something like this happen to them. Any help would be appreciated.
I have had this happen on other cars and it is usually the start/run switch on the steering column under the dash. I don't know about your model but on most cars there is a rod that runs from the ignition switch to the start switch bolted to the steering column just behind the dash. It is possible that your switch has just come loose and needs to be readjusted and tightened down. I have also seen this switch come apart where the electrical part of the switch pulls loose from the mounting tabs on the base. It is fairly easy to replace the switch on the column and you do not have to pull the ignition switch. On rare occations the pushrod willl break up near the ignition switch and this involves some labor to replace. The switch is inexpensive but beware if you purchase one from Autozone. The quality is cheap.
