Default '89 remote keyless entry?

I want to upgrade an '89 Coupe with a keyless entry system. Eckler's used to carry such a system (Part# 40634) but it's discontinued. What I like about it is that it's a simple "plug-in" one, no cutting or splicing of the factory wiring harness required. Can anyone tell me where I can get this or an equivalent system?

Thanks,

Carlos

I'm not aware of any plug & play ones like that anymore. GM has a nice kit that can be installed with minimal work though. I can't remember the part # off the top of my head, but I know Jeff Kopp installed it in his 85.

The VKE1000 is a great unit but certainly not plug and play. I wouldn't attempt installation unless you are comfortable doing lots of wire splices in tight spaces.

I took the easy way out and had Car Toys install a Python 440HP Keyless entry system in my 1990 Coupe. They charged me extra for labor because it's a Corvette, $260 total. Factory alarm still works and I can pop the rear hatch, too. It was worth it to me to have them do it. I just can't seem to bend like I used to!

At my age (71) I have no problem at all bending over. It's the straightening up part that makes the groans audible to my neighbors! I put the plug and play system in my 92 and it wasn't all that easy. I estimated a 1 1/2 hour job time; it took me FOUR HOURS, mostly due the fact that my head would not swivel 180 degrees and my arm was somewhat thicker than a pipe cleaner! As an aside, the gentleman that built and sold that unit through various vendors passed away. My 93 has the factory PKE (thank goodness) but if I had to do it over again, I'd let someone else do their thing. I have a theory that the Corvette is built in layers at the factory. It is a bear to work under the dash once it is assembled! I think I have lost a minimum of 3 pounds of skin doing various chores in the interior, in and around the underside of the dash. I also believe in my heart that the automotive engineers that designed the C4 got some kind of major "GOTCHA" award, the water pump/opti combo was the high-water mark of their achievements. Having groused about all that, I love my Corvette with a passion. I forgive everything when I run up through the gears. I do say a lot of prayers that nothing breaks, however!
