Default Throttle body question

I would like to upgrade to a 52mm throttle body over my stock unit. Is this a simple job? I am assuming that unless the factory unit is tricky to take off then this would be just a matter of taking off the stock and replacing it with the new one. Any feedback?

Yes it is simple. I'd steer clear of the BBKs as I have heard nothing but bad issues about them. I have the 52mm TPIS which is actually a stocker ported out. Never had any issues with it.

well there is one issue that might complicate it for you - there is a coolant line that runs through the throttle body. not really that hard, but it is there.

There is a guy named Koldos who will rebush the throttle body with bearings and open it up to 52 mm. It costs less than a new one and is much better. I have had mine for a year now and no more roaming idle. I will see kf I can find his e-mail address. Hopefully someone reading this can give you the e-mail.GOod luck Rich

When you change it's the perfect time to do the TB coolant bypass; once you have to mess with coolant lines in/out of the TB you will see the best reason for doing this mod.

But it can and should be eliminated in most cases. Also, I believe most, if not all aftermarket TBs come w/o the IAC housing so just get a TB gasket kit and put your stock one on the new TB. It bolts on the bottom and has the air and coolant passages in it and also houses your IAC. The kit should also have a new top plate gasket and seal for the TPS. You will not need to remove the IAC from it's housing to change it over. A new TB probably comes with the gasket kit but I bought mine used so I'm not sure. Also it's a BBK and works fine. They had some sticking problems at one time but have gotten them worked out from what I understand.

You'll also need a multimeter to reset your throttle position sensor.

Would like to hear the price & info on the Koldos guy too...

Tell me about your roaming idle issue? I'm about to post another thread as I have yet to resolve mine.

If I remember right, I paid a little over $200 for it. GM does not put bushings or bearings in the housing where the shaft goes. Constant movement ovalizes the holes causing the throttle plate to stick partly open affecting idle.
This guy bores the shaft holes out, installs bearings, and then bores it to 52 mm(stock is 48mm).And installs new throttle plates.Fixed my idle problem and with the bearings, it is better than buying new. I can't find his e-mail but here is a link he has on e-bay for a different throttle body. You can use the contact link on that page to contact him about your throttle body. He will send you one and you send your old one back as a core. He does very good work. Highly recommended.

First , unless you are pushing 400 rwhp , you DONT need a larger throttle body.

If you are going to get one get it from DAVE KOLDOS...does a good job for a very reasonable price and they dont have problems. I have one on my car......

I agree. Save your money, this mod will do absolutely nothing for you unless you port the intake to match the throttle body opening of 52mm. The 52mm might actually HURT your throttle response.

Do a search on this subject before you spend the money.

My 2 cents...

According to my calculations, the stock throttle body (48mm) will flow up to 565cfm. There is no way a 350ci engine will come close to flowing that much air unless you've got an extremely efficient engine at very high RPM. If that's the case you're probably not driving it on the street. All a larger throttle body will do for a close to stock engine is decrease throttle response. Therefore, I'm not sure what all the hype is about concerning throttle bodies.

i would say that unless you are running about 350HP, that u dont even need to go to a 52mm TB

ACTUALLY the intake port is 52mm and the throttle body has a flanged design that makes it 48mm . boring out the throttle body to 52mm will match the the intake bore , thats if u are talking about an LT1, but it is over kill unless u are running about 350 Hp u really dont even need to do that . just a note( found all that out after i did it )

Also, FYI the LT-4, said to have around 330-360HP depending on who you ask, has a 48mm throttle body.
