Legally... you can only take it to an A/C shop

...r12 (freon) escapes due to leaks, which is when it needs recharged...
...you could always 'make' a leak, just by loosening a fitting somewhere

would that be safe though? my car hasnt been running for 3 months. and its cold outside. if it started leaking would the pressure blow the fitting off?
thanks alot your friend

Legally you can't vent it to the atmosphere. EPA would love to bend you over and clean you out.
Where are you located? What is in your system, R12, or 134a?
Do you plan on putting it back together later?

If you are just going to vent it to atmosphere, just loosen a fitting until you hear it hissing and leave it alone until it stops. It will not blow off. If you plan on using your AC again when the car is back on the road I suggest you go to an AC shop and have them evacuate the system and see if they will store it for you. Otherwise when you go to refill the system you will get bent over. R12 is very expensive, and I am not a fan of R134 in a system designed for R12. It works but never as good as it once did.

Please don't vent R12. If the car is down @ Emory I may be able to help you.

dang no hissin!! i took the whole Ac out. i think what happened was that when i was messing around a couple weeks ago with the evaporator core, i started it up and i had left one of its sensors undone! and white cloud of bad smelling stuff was coming from under the hood. i traced it back to the sensor! and today i removed everything. and absoutely nothing came out not one hiss!
yes i agree i wouldnt do that if its illegal. but i def wouldnt do that because i dont want to hurt the enviroment!!
thanks alot guys
now ill go a little big faster with out the ac lag. and soon im gonna get a new smaller belt to by pass it. thanks agian!!!

That A/C System is heavy. I removed my AC & Airpump on my 85, was 46lbs total.

first thing i did was tke my swiss army knife cut right through those hoses and then unscrewed and unbolted everything else out. for know the ac compressor is still in with nothing running to it. because ill have to size up the right size belt.
the compressor is the heaviest and the evap core is kinda heavy. im gonna fab up a piece of metal to cover the entrance to the car in the fire wall, where the air came in before.
cant wait..more power and less weight=
thanks Alot your friend

i bet with switching to LTs over the stock cast Iron manifolds,
muffler elims, ac removal, and spare tire removal. ive shaved about 100 lbs from my car. good for freebies and some LTs !

Good post....I am thinking about the same thing here soon...but I am pretty sure mine still has Freon in it...so taking the advise of others i will take it to the shop, but unfortunatley I have the hood and front bumper off so I guess its gonna have to wait.
