Default I'm a moron....

ugh...

I donno how many remember that yesterday, I posted that my door locks did not work.

So, I proceed to test, assuming that after all my tests are done, the circuit was bad. I then bypass the bad circuit, making the locks work.

Fine.

Last nite, I find that the horn don't work!

This morning, I tear back into it... this time, I re-read the aux fuse panel... someone, long long time ago, put a 10 amp fuse into the door lock spot... and I miss read the block - text above the fuse in question. I cut the wire for the VATS!!!!!!!

So, today, I undo my beautiful repair, and make another beautiful repair, replace the blown fuse and head about my day... but that killed 2 hours of testing.

One final question: Who the hell designed that cars electrical system? What a convoluted cluster **** that is... jeez... the relays? Not enough slack to get them out of their mourings to test the wiring... And then, it's nearly impossible to get them back onto their brackets... argh.

Oh, well. All good. Everything seems to be working.

BTW, the electrical system was designed so you had to bring it back to the dealer for repair.

no. I have a helms manual. makes me smarter than them... or so I thought.

But, the manual did help me determine that yes, the Anti-Theft had nothing at all to do with the lack of function of the door locks...

I was jut wondering thee same thing about the electrical designers. I just replaced my EGR Temp switch. The connection for the wire is down below the distributor. It looks impossible to disconnect and reconnect the wire without taking the distributor cap off and possibly removing the distributor. I showed it to a local vet shop and they said that to leave the car and they could do it in about 2 hours. I told them no thanks, spliced the wire, soldered it and heat wrapped it in about 10 minutes. Happy days again, no more Code 32.

I think the answer is that the design engineers completed the overall vehicle then it was up to the electrical engineers to 1. make it work and 2. make it fit (or vice versa).

I've been turning wrenches professionally for 30+ years and seldom a day goes by when I don't stop and say, "What the hell was I thinking?" It seems to be getting worse as I get older. 20 years ago, I thought I just about knew it all, but now.... me just gets dumber every day!

It is only what you learn AFTER you know it all, that counts.

After touring the plant in Bowling Green, I can honestly say that the cars were designed to be built easily, but were not designed to be repaired (it takes them all of five seconds to install the main wiring harness, cheaters).

Dude... I've made worse mistakes... I always tell people one of two things.

1. I have never been acused of being smart and today isn't going to be the first day...

2. I'm not as dumb as I look...

At least you were able to 'waste' time and fix your problem... I unloaded a car at a junk yard only to find out that I just needed a $5 part to get the car to start and run perfect... now that is dumb luck. At least I can blame it on the fact that I was 18 years stupid and it was a POS Mitsubishi Mirage... And I got the car for $50... so I didn't really loose my a$$

My biggest fear with a stupid problem, is that it will cost me more money than I have (and since I am unemployed right now, that ain't much of trick) to repair!!!!

It is a good thing I have lotsa tools... and time to kill!!!! The last thing I want is to have to take my Vette over to the local Chevy stealer and have their morons work on it... I have the Helms manual... and a nice Fluke meter... and the Grace of God to keep me from going bankrupt!!!
