Well, my days of driving an A4 are numbered. I found a great deal on eBay on a 69K mile 92 ZF6 with all the conversion parts that I just could not pass up.
I'll be sure to keep a picture log once the project starts so people that are considering this project know what they are in for.
I am thinking about going straight to a single mass flywheel and compatible 11" clutch... Any recommendations or websites I can check out that detail the dual mass to single mass conversion?

Just be aware of the clatter that will result with using the SMF. It is noticeable at idle with the clutch out. Really interesting job you are tackling. Any computer issues to deal with?

I am aware of this, I am thinking the benefits might outwieght the clatter however. Or not. Hopefully I can do some research to figure that out. One thing is certain, DMF are $$$ to replace and I am not sure of the condition of the one I am getting.

There will be a few, but I have the tools to take care of it. I will probably first try examining a bin from a M6 car and see what I must modify. I am thinking off the top of my head all I need to to do is set all the shift fields to 255 and disable the torque converter locking. But like I said, I'll have a look at what an M6 bin looks like and go from there.
Also thanks for the link of the required parts for the SMF conversion.
What are you going to do with your Auto Trans? I have been tossing around the idea of swapping my ZF6 to an Auto with a big stall.
Hopefully sell everything. The transmission was rebuilt about 20k miles ago.
The transmission, bellhousing, flywheel, clutch, etc was 1650, plus shipping. Pedals and other "swap specific" things were an extra 200. In reality, that is still a ton of money to be dumping on a used transmission of unknown history, but I have to rationalize it to myself somehow!
The black label ZF6 has gears which are stronger, but noiser due to their cut. The rated torque capacity of the black label is 450 ft/lbs, while the blue label is rated at 400 ft/lbs. zfdoc has lots of information on the transmission if you are interested at zrdoc.com
I am not certain at the moment what the driveshaft situation is. I know the yolk on the trans is different, but what I am not certain about is if D44 snout is longer than the D36, requiring a custom shaft to be made. Regardless, I will probably have the shaft balanced at a local driveline shop where I can have length modifications done if required.
As an aside, I don't drag and don't even plan on it, so the I have faith the D36 will hold up just fine since I typically don't subject my car to the type of shock loads that creates. The races I do get involved in tend to be freeway speed roll-ons, which is actually the main reason for me going with the manual; having a gear "between" the 2nd and 3rd gear of the 4L60E's ratios.
For my checkbook's sake, I hope I can prove you guys wrong about needing the D44

On the Trans conversion. You’re going to love it. I’ve only driven mine a few miles so far, but the D36 feels fine (other than the 2.59’s) I believe it’ll last a long time as long as your not dropping the clutch on it at every light.
I’m still using the stock auto. Bin file and everything seems to be working fine.
Keep us updated on the conversion, and post pics whenever you can.
The drive shaft LENGTH is determined by what rear end you have, shorter shaft for 44. THe ZF takes a different yoke. Are you going to change out the tunnel? Cause I did and have a few tips, its really easy actually. You DO not have to change rears it you don't abuse it, but you will be off on acceleration due to the longer gearing in the 36, which will not match up well to the gearing in the ZF.

Oh yes, I forgot about the driveshaft. I started out with the factory aluminum and the new slip yoke, got it home and found it was 1 inch to short (1 F’n inch) so I had to have a custom driveshaft made.
You don't have to do a custom driveshaft, there are 2 shafts available for the vettes, a short shaft for the 44 and the longer shaft for the 36, its the same for the c channel. The trans are the same length installed, just have a different yoke.
