Default Base Timing

On my '85 L98...

I've finally got a few mod goodies to put on...

before I start modding, I wanna make absolutely sure the stock setup is running as it should. The only thing I haven't done is to check the timing... I just pretty much didn't think of it.

Anyway, I did a search and came up with a few extremes 0* to 14*. I know every engine is different, but what should the timing on my L98 be set to?

I'll advance or retard it based on how it runs after I get it to what it should be (if it isn't already).

stock on a 85 is 6 degrees with the EST wire unplugged.my 85 is set at 10. most of us run between 8-12. start at 6 and bump it up 2 degrees at a time and see how it feels.

Are you talking about unplugging the ESC module?

OHBOY! It's time to pull out your MANUAL. You MUST have read the advice, posted dozens of times, regarding the disconnecting the single, black/tan wire near the brake booster.

The best way to determine the optimum timing for YOUR car, is to make a 1/4 mile pass. Then advance it 2* and make another run. Keep advancing it until the MPH at the end of the 1/4, stops improving. Then set it back to the previous setting that gave you best mph.

RACE ON!!!

Sometimes I think you work for Helms, CFIEFI

Anyway, yes I have a manual- I'll search through that tonight.

And when I searched old threads, they all said just the same thing the first response thread "EST Wire" with no description...

But I now know what to look for... that's why you ask questions right?

Thanks guys

I'll start by makng sure its at 6*... then I'll bump it up a little a make a "run" at the local "track" I'll see where that leaves me...

Do you guys think I should leave the EST wire disconnected while I'm testing it out?

No, if you leave it disconnected, the computer will NOT advance the timing. You'll be stuck at 6*

Tell THEM. And have them send me my commissions. There are WAAAAAY too many questions asked by people that have the answer at hand, and find it easier to type than to read. Heaven forbid, they might actually LEARN something while looking for the info they went in for.

Absolutly not, as many have chimed in. But DO be sure to disconnect it again for the resetting of the timing. Good luck getting definitive mph numbers without electronic timers.

RACE ON!!!
