Need to install flywheel without any balance reference
One of the things I have been thinking about while I wait for the ZF6 stuff to get here is how I am going to install the flywheel. I've been searching through the archives and read when people change the dual mass flywheels on the LT1, they must transfer the weights from their original unit to the new one. Well I am going from a flexplate to a flywheel so how will I go about installing the flywheel and keep everything in balance or know where the weights should be moved (if at all)? As much as I love working on my vette, the tought of pulling up the transmission multiple times to adjust out driveline vibration does not sound like much fun!
I have a bullentin from GM Bowling Green that details how they balance the LT1 engine by adding weights to the holes on the outer edge of the flywheel. You have to buy the weight inserts from GM and place them in various positions on the flywheel that has worked for them at Bowling Green. They give you a starting position and then you try it out. If it is in balance you'll feel smooth above 3000 rpm. You don't drive the weights all the way in until you achieve balance. They give you 4 different positions for the weights that should solve the balance problem. It's a trial and error deal, have patience. You can get to the weights by removing the inspection plate. Your tranny stays in. Oh, this only works on the OEM dual mass flywheel.
Excellent, one more thing I don't have to worry about. BTW, this is an OEM dual mass flywheel, however it is used, so there will most likely already be some weights in it. How hard are they to remove?
I also like the idea of taking the flexplate and flywheel to a machine shop to be balanced together. that makes good sense, why didn't I think of that?
