Default Idle Problem

I'm having an idle problem with my 92. On occassions, while sitting at stoplights, the car will automatically rev up and down. I really have to hold the brake to keep the car from moving forward. I believe the highest it has rev to was around 1200rpms, which is pretty loud with the flowmasters. The symptom seems to get worse when the engine temp rises. It may be a faulty IAC value or a dirty throttle body, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

A/c on or off? If the a/c is on, PCM may not be getting the a/c request signal. IAC tries to compensate for the load, but doesn't really know what to do, so the idle surges. Hooking up a scanner will take the guess work out of it.

The A/C is off. Unfortunely, I don't have access to a scanner. Is it possible to use a paper clip to retrieve codes.

Your problem is symptomatic of a TPS (throttle positioning sensor) failure. Check your codes; a code 21 or 22 will give you the bad news on your TPS.

IAC...

That's one of the symptons listed in Helms I believe...

anyway mine did that, when the IAC was replaced, it went away. You could also try cleaning it instead of replacing it...

If your car has lot's of miles you might want to check the throttle body shaft and see if it had much wear. A lot of wear will tend to keep the throttle from returning to the fully closed and may also leak. I have read several articles on this matter.
If I can find them I will come back and post the link.
