On C4's equiped with the L98 engine there was some sort of additional device bolted to the front of the water pump. My gut tells me that it's some kind of vibration dampener and is there for a distinct purpose. On almost all accounts though you can ditch it without any ill effects and pick up one or two horsepower by reducing drag. Personally I think it probably decreases the water pump bearing life but I can't prove it. Other engines ran without it, what would make the L98 special to require it?

In the 70s, they were popular among a certain segment of youth who threw them around in parks on warm afternoons because they were too stoned to participate in a real sport....... sorry.
It's also more like 5 pounds, not 10, but makes getting the belt on and off easier, so I removed mine. No difference with or without here, so I'm glad I left it.
It was described as a vibration damper somewhere in one of the books I've read on C4's. If I run across that part again I'll give a more specific reference.

Seems to me I remember throwing a frisbee around in the '60s - oops, I forgot, if you remember the '60s, you weren't there!

Someday, when our cars are older, everyone will be wanting to return them to stock to maximize their value. You'll have the market cornered on frisbees!
