Default What's needed for SR conversion??

I am strongly considering purchacing a Accel Super Ram now. Besides the base, runners, and plenum, what else will I need to bolt this beast to the top of my 86 motor with iron heads? What can I reuse from the TPI setup? I need all the specifics so there are no surprises when I purchance the stuff, and get the car apart. Pics are welcome too, as it would be easier to see what is involved. Is there anything at all that needs to be changed? I have stock bottom end, with stock cam, stock iron heads, and everything in my sig. What is my gain in HP and torque probably going to be around?? Thanks!!

you can reuse your injectors and fuel rails. it is basicly a waste of money to add a superram to a stock head and cam engine. with the right cam and heads you can add 150 hp easily. but if you planned on upgrading the heads and cam down the road and you dont mind pulling that nightmare apart again then go for it.

with stock heads and cam id say you would gain 25fwhp and 30fwtq. i may be a little low but when i added big mouth base and asm runners on my car i picked up about 20hp..

i agree. you did nicely with the exhaust, and now i see you're doing the right thing with the intake. but your old heads and stock cam becomes your enemy now.

mos90 is right, if you're serious about doing it right, i would make the investment now; get yourself a nice set of aftermarket alum heads and the complementing Accel 219 cam and get it over with. you won't have to worry about upgrades later.

you can either do it later (twice over = $$) or now (once over = $)

prepare to have your neck snapped and your head thru the windshield, which is the proper way a sports car should perform

You can use the stock throttle body and injectors and fuel rail as mentioned. You better get twice the gaskets too. They are good to have on hand, if you get a vacumn leak and have to chase it down. You will see a little improvement but like it has been said, your air pumping through the heads being controlled by the cam is the limiting major factor. Then you will also need a chip to be reburnt to control it all. Good luck. I would also agree to change it all at once rather than peice meal it, so save up for the big change.

Not really. There are definitely gains to be had even with just the 3 main supperam pieces.

On an '86 you'll have to replace the formed metal tubing that runs along the top of the valve covers as well with '88-91 style formed rubber hoses. The metal ones won't fit under the runners.

I agree with Scorp.

So you have to take it all back off when longblock time comes around. No big deal. The first one or two times are a slittle slow and rightly so, but then you will get faster and efficient at R/R ing the SR.
I could do it in my sleep after so many times. It'll put hair on your chest .

I would encourage you to do it. You will love the SR!

I don't know if 86 has the 9th injector, but you would have to eliminate it in the new chip if it does as the SR has no provision for it.

The runner gaskets. Get an extra set or two. They are quite thin and delicate.

There are threads here with tips and tricks to expidite SR R/R.

Okay. Now next question. Will the LPE 219 cam work well with a super ram, and stock iron heads? Also, will the accel base bolt right up to iron heads, or does the manifold need to be modified?
