I was told to clean the contacts between my firewall harness connectors behind the battery, as that may be the culprit in my flickery tach/lcd display.
I removed my battery and can get to the harness, but the only thing I can remove is a plastic cover over the top set of wires, and can't find any ways to actually disconnect the whole wiring harness to clean it.
Anyone has any Ideas?
BTW I have an '85 vette, but the harness/firewall should be pretty much the same as newer ones too IMO.
Ahh... thank you!! I finally got it.. What a PITA it was to get to that screw. Wouldn't have seen it if I wasn't told it was there.
Ok so I got the exposed contacts, I cleaned the contact parts and left the dark sutty weather protection goop inside. I used a small wirebrush to lift the goop off the exposed contacts and hopefully this'll make better contact and solve my issues.. we'll know tomorrow..
Usual problems here are water intrusion, a greenish or whiteish look. At any rate when you're thru-use some spray undercoating to seal the top and sides of the harness connection to seal it from future water intrusion (something GM screwed up on according to Killebrew) also make sure the cowl drip tube is not directly dumping onto the wire harness-another GM screw up.
I recently cleaned the harness connector on my 89. I found that removing the battery and its holder allowed me better access to the connector. I cleaned the black gunk off the terminals using a tooth brush and xylene solvent. A rag placed under the connector caught all excess. I placed a coating of Ox-guard on all terminals before reassembly.
