I am trying to recharge my 1991 Vet and can't get the compressor to come on.
I replaced the condensor and radiator. It is cool outside but the compressor will not come on at all. Is there a way to by-pass? How many pounds is a full charge?
You should really pick up an A/C manual... Hayne's makes a good one and its available at autozone's for about 15 bucks...
if they A/C system is undercharged, it wont turn on...
if it's overcharged it becomes dangerous...
The pressure for your car should be listed in a manual for your year
Do a search "by user name" in the C4 tech/perf section. The user name you should use is SunCr. SunCr has written tons about the C4 A/C system, how it works and how to repair it. He knows his stuff.
You need to pull a vacuum first and in view of it's age, you might want to replace the Accumulator. Then disconnect the battery to clear the low charge code. Let the vacuum pull in the first can of the total charge and then start the engine. With the low pressure switch jumpered (put a paperclip across the connector terminals) to keep the compressor from cycling, charge until the high side pressure is about 2.2 to 2.5 times the outside air temp.
