Is it mechanical or electronic/electrical?
Intermittently I get a very high pitched sound when I start my '92 LT1 w/145k miles. It does not vary in pitch with RPMs, nor go away. I turn lights off/on, the radio, heater, etc, all to no avail. Then it suddenly goes away. I've only heard it from inside, not with the hood open and me standing there. It definitely does not sound like any belt I've ever heard. 
Any thoughts?

I have a 93 which I have noticed that noise. On mine it is the electric air pump that is on the drivers side up under the headlight. You can disconnect it to see if it is what makes the noise but this will set a SES code so you will have to hook it back up. I believe it is a purge when they are first started.
