Default No codes good or bad?

I have been using my code reader for a while now and it has always given me codes through the SES light.
By battery went dead on my car a couple of weeks ago because I left the door open in the garage and forgot about it for a couple of days.
The battery is recharged now but I don't get any codes.
Not even the 12 code.
I thought when there were no codes to show I would still see a '12'?
So my question is. Should I worry about it, is something screwed up or is this totally fine?
Thanks for any answers.
Jeff

disconnecting the battery will clear all stored codes...

But you should ALWAYS get a code 12 when you check...

Usually that's an indication something is wrong with the ECM...

Or your code reader. I'm assuming it's an 87 by your screen name, and therefore OBD 1. Have you tried reading the codes with a paperclip in the ALDL yet? Try this and see if you get a 12 code through the SES light. If you do, your code reader isn't working correctly.

Definitely try this before replacing anything.

Try the paper clip in the ALDL pins trick to pull codes; if you still don't get the code "12", there is indeed something wrong with the ECM.

How does the engine run now?

Good tip, I'll try the paperclip.
Where exactly does it go again?
Thanks

Jumper ALDL pins A&B (upper right) and turn the key On.

65z01 I missed your last question.
The engine seems to run fine but only in the garage. Too much snow on the ground to go outside.

Yep....and count the check engine flashes....

flash [pause] flash flash

3 times.

If your car is running fine, I'm betting your ECM is good and your code reader has a problem.

Good luck.

Okay so it looks like the computer.
I tried the paper clip, fan comes on but no SES flashing.
Exact same as when I plug in the store bought paper clip/ code reader.
Good thing I bought a spare ECM on ebay a couple of months ago just because the price was right.

I brought this post back out again because I had a related question.
I read that some cars need to be driven to reset the computer. Is it possible that I am getting nothing for codes because the car has not been moved or even put in gear sinse the battery was charged?

Thanks

here's a question no one asked...

do you EVER see the SES light come on?
it should for a second when you start the car...
Might be something as easy as the light burnt on in the DIC

I have disconnected the battery for a week at a time already, and still get code 12 when i check... (without driving the car around)

Thank you Mike Whipreck.

I don't know what fixed it but everything seems to be working fine now.
I had to fix a couple of vacuum lines under the plennum and replace the EGR temp switch. I did this and put everything back together. Still nothing but I ran the car until the oil temp guage started to register.
Turned it off and the SES light came on. Put in the paper clip and read code 12 3x, then a pause and code 12 again.
Ahhh, it's a good feeling.
Thanks for your help all.
