Default "Y" pipe need coated?

This is probably a silly question but I ordered some ceramic coated Hooker 2149 long tubes from Summit today for my 90 L98 and the Y pipe for them doesn't come coated (just painted). For $176 it should be, but wasn't.

Should it be or should I get it coated?? Just wondering if it will be an issue and if any of you got yours coated. Dont want it rusting or cooking my butt.

I got mine coated, had the rear Y pipe coated as well.

For the price of the coating, if it makes the pipe last twice as long its covered its cost.

If you decide to coat the Y, decide where you're putting your 02 sensor first.

I bought a coated set of headers & front Y for my '86 IROC 7yrs ago and the Y just this year rusted through.

I don't know how long it would have lasted if just painted but think the coating helped with life span. I should mention that the vehicle was driven mostly in the winter on snow & salt covered roads.

There is a guy on the forum that coats for a good price. Sounds like a good guy, to me. Yes coat all of it inside and out.

Dont coat the Ypipe, because you'll have to cut it to make it fit anyway...

Huh??? Are you sure? This is supposed to be specific to my application..for the $ it should fit without cutting Your probably right though. I guess we'll see.

Mine fit fine, no cutting. What are you talking about? Just make sure when your bolting up the collector bolts to leave all the header bolts loose.

From reading posts in the archives I have heard countless stories of the Hooker Ypipe not fitting properly...

One forum member recommonded 'tossing the hooker pipe, and making the factory pipe fit.'

If I get time I'll dig through the search and try and find them again

See my response above...

I should have specified though, it was not personal experience- I was referring to fellow forum members that posted about that Hooker Y pipe.

I do think you should consider getting it coated. But I would make sure that you dont have any fitment issues prior to doing so

I remember this happening too, however I heard there was a redesign that resolved some of this. I hope so for your sake!

Thanks mikey, hopefully I'll get the redesigned ones and be happy like bradvette.

Just put the Hooker 2149 with the Y pipe on my car (91 Coupe). The headers came coated, they look really nice, but I doubt if the Y pipe was. Guess I blew that one. Live and learn. Car sounds awesome.
LOL.
