Default L98 exhaust?

So what is best for an L98 that wants to keep low end torque? I'm more interested in stoplight to stoplight performance and not 1/4 mile times.

Stock exhaust? Front Y pipe without pre-cats? Highflow mufflers? Other?

Inquiring minds want to know...

There isnt one thats just going to maximize torque, you have plenty of torque.

What you need is any of the popular ones, they'll give roughly the same increase, on an L98, in HP and Torque.

So the only difference between them is basically the sound, and thats how you should decide between them.

on my '87, i noticed the biggest difference when i went from the stock manifolds to a set of Lingenfelter 1 5/8" headers.

those are nice...maybe the best... the best for an L98

I dont think its the rest of the exhaust so much as the headers that build your torque. Making any of the rest bigger can only help... At least from what i've read and been told

For optimum exhaust mods install FL headers, hi-flow cat and hi-flow cat-back.

What mods do you have now? What other mods do you have in mind?

I am using the Hooker 1 3/4" (2149) and they are very nice. Jet hot did a great job. My exhaust mods are in my sig, and I highly recommend them. Word of advise though-Get the Percy dead soft auminum header gaskets, Trust Me. I went through two sets of header gaskets before I installed them, and the leaked. If you even get a little bit of a leak, it will burn out that area of the gasket. Aluminum gaskets dont do that, plus the come thick, so you can't go wrong. Do it right the first time and get the aluminum gaskets.

Do you have emissions compliance to contend with?
If not, long tube headers like hookers 3" pipe true dual all the way back to mufflers of your choice.
This will be loud !!

Get a couple of quotes from local muffler shops on system fabrication and installation once you settle. Sometimes them doing everything is cheaper than buying these ridiculously expensive systems the catalogs offer.
Corvette tax I think

I hope to get headers for my L98 one of these days and from what I've read here on the Forum TPIS headers get favorable comments. My goal is the same as yours, stop light to stop light acceleration, not 1/4 mile time.

Can you direct me to "what I've read here on the Forum"? Are the favorable comments regarding low end torque? Most of the exhaust mods that I've read about give HP gains at the expense of low end torque. That's not what I'm after. I'd rather stay stock than give up low end torque.

Thanks,

Jim S.

Do a search, please...
Headers are debated constantly...

Many agree that 1 5/8" headers off the best increase in torque...
but just as many swear by their 1 3/4" headers...

On this issue there just doesn't seem to be specific threads that will answer all the questions for our individual cars. There has been much discussion about headers but as Mikey said, opinions vary. I find it helpful after reading comments of others to check their profile for the year and mods before taking their comments as appropriate for my Vette. I''m still watching these "header" threads but so far I'm thinking about the 1 5/8 for my 89 and it seems that most of the members with early C4s that are not heavily modded seem to say TPIS fits well and perform well. It also seems that the positive comments about the Hookers are on later C4s or early ones with lots of mods. Thats not absolute, results vary. Just my observations here, and I'm still "watching" before I make up my mind.
