Default When is the 700r4 supposed to shift?

I was experiencing some early shift problems with my 700r, so i took a look at the TV cable, and it was visually misadjusted (the stud at the end of the cable had some space between itself and the throttle lever.) So I did the adjustment procedure (push in button, pull back on sheath, let go of button, go to WOT.)

My shifts feel much better now, much firmer, but they are MUCH later than they were before - I just want to make sure they're not abnormal. @ WOT in any particular gear, I will run to JUST below redline (like 5500-5600 RPM or so, judging from the graph.) Is this normal? The shifts, like I said, feel firm & positive. Just making sure I don't have an abnormally high shift now.

If your engine is pulling well through the shift points then they are fine.

One or two clicks in either direction to "fine" tune it would not be a problem. ANymore than that and your asking for trouble.

the TV does not do anything to WOT shifts.

There is a spring in the valve body that keeps tension on the tv valve. This spring is known to break or simply lose it's tension. Alot of guys adjust the tv cable to adjust for it. Very inexpensive part and can be changed without dropping the valve body. I would change this spring the next time the pan is down. Piece of mind!

I bought a kit from from this place a while back for the last project I did. This whole article should be made a sticky, it explains the TV system, problems and cures. Also what symptoms are experienced with weak TV springs, and short or long springs.

Very helpful link. I think I understand now. I didn't do anything to the shift points which are basically pre-set in the trans. What I did do is sync up the TV cable and the Accel cable, so that I'm actually recieving those shift points, instead of the early shifts I was having before.

For piece of mind also buy a pressure guage and check it. Make sure there is an instant rise in pressure with any movement of the throttle. If that TV cable is improperly adjusted the fliud pressure MAY be too low and bye bye tranny in short order.

For real I think the the 200 or 700R4's are great transmissions. The only thing I don't care for is the wide ratio between 1st and 2nd in the 700, the 200 has a closer ratio.

Actually I'm gonna be the owner of a stick but would have preferred an auto, no human can throw a stick around fast enough to compete with a performance modded automatic. Plus, if you like drag racing like I do, a transbrake is the shizznit.

I see you have an 1985 car. If that is correct your WOT shift points are incorrect. Replace the TV cable with a Delco immediatly. They are the only ones that have the correct cable for TPI cars. You may also need to add weight to the govenor to bring the shift points down.

Can anybody else chime in on this? I don't want to blow up my trans. Can anyone else with a 700r4 let me know when their WOT shifts are? I can't find specs anywhere, etc.

At WOT my TPI car shifted @ 4250. I had to trim the govenor weights to raise the shift point to 4800. If you are unsure of the history of your transmission replace the TV cable first, with a dealer part only. Then your WOT shift point can be adjusted with the govenor.

Let's make sure I'm doing this correctly - I press the D-shaped button on my TV cable adjuster in, then pull back on the sheath part of the cable behind the adjuster (the black sleeve) until it won't go back anymore. Then I release the button. Then I manually rotate the throttle to WOT position. I hear a click. Is that what I'm supposed to do/what's supposed to happen?

Yes, it should ratchet through to the correct position. Not one click but several. Is your car stock?

IMO 5500rpm is to high for a TPI car. They only make power to 4800rpm.
