Default Oil Pump Shaft

I have an 86 vettte and Im reinstalling the distributor. Im using a large screwdriver to turn the oil pump shaft so I can get the rotor to fire off on number one. I noticed that i can wiggle the oil pump shaft around with the screwdriver. This is a new motor that hasnt been fired off yet. Is there supposed to be play with the oil pump shaft or did something come loose. I have a call into my machine shop but its the weekend. Its a high volume oil pump. I primed the engine and it oiled up good so i was wondering if this is normal play

Those suckers are as loose as a goose. You don't have a problem. If you look inside your distributor gear, you'll see how it gets stabilized on the top end, with the distributor in place.

THe oilpump drive shaft is coupled to the pump by a sleeve, metal in the case of a hi-volume pump. As stated the fit is best described as loose as a goose. Don't worry about it.

Ditto, no worries! For just a few bucks, you can go for a hardened shaft w/ a steel coupler (instead of plastic) and I hope your builders installed this. If it's a stocker or mildly modified engine, you'll be fine either way.
