87 Digital Display Problem
I have a digital display problem. From time to time my digitals display illumination lights flicker. They don't go completely out but they will blink from bright to dim in a random manner. I think it is worse when the car is cold but can't be sure. I have searched the forum and can't find anything. I seem to remember something about grounding. If that could be the problem where is the ground point that I need to check ? Any other ideas would be appreciated as well.

goe to the bulkhead. It's about the size of a dime and about 1/2 inch thick. Splice into the black/white wire and run it thru the bulkhead and groun it. This MIGHT solve your problem-but if it doesn't-just leave it connected and think about pulling the cluster as described on the web
site. Good luck-alot of us have already had to do this.

It pretty much shows you everything to fix your digital dash. Had mine working line new in no time.
There are two circuit boards in your cluster and they plug together with a single row of connectors. The pin closest to the center of the circuit board carries the lamp current and the socket on the rear board has an age relaxed spring and now has connection resistance. The lamp current passing through this connection resistance makes so much heat that it has unsoldered the pin on the front board and it makes intermittent connection causing your 4 lamps to go on and off randomly. Resoldering the pin will not fix this problem and replacing the socket is difficult. I soldered a short piece of insulated #22 hookup wire from the pin to the socket and I will never have that problem again.
