Basic auto trans removal questions

Default Basic auto trans removal questions

Just a few simple questions regarding pulling an 700R4 from an '89.
I know everything that needs to be un hooked from it.

Does the torque convertor just slide off the front of the trans? Can it fall loose on its own if the angle of the trans is wrong?

What supports the trans weight when removing, can a jack and board be put under the pan or is there someplace else to support it?

Where is the balance point of the trans, near the front of the pan, near the rear of the bellhousing, somewhere else?

If you don't have a lift and then can use a normal tranny jack and you are going to just do it on jack stands buy your self ONE OF THESE... It works great,cheap price and will save you a lot of problems. I just removed mine a few weeks ago and did not have this when taking it out. I used the floor jack and wood way. As I was lowering it the trans snaged the cooler lines and flipped it off my jack and busted the crap out of the bell-housing. I then bought on of these to put it back in and it work so great. I used my 1/2 impact wrench to drive it.. So cool.

Here is what you are going to need to do.
Drain trans.
Unhook ALL wires.
unhook TV cable.
Unhook shifter cable
Remove starter.
then remove the bell housing dust covor.
unbolt the converter from the flywheel (3 bolts).
put the trans jack on the tranny (then one I said to buy if using jackstands).
remove C-beam and drive shaft.
tilt trans down (making sure you dont crush anything on the motor against the firewall).
Remove the two cooler lines going into the trans.
With the motor and trans tipped back remove the top bolts holding the trans to the motor.
Remove the Tran's dipstick tube.
Now put a floorjack under the motor. Remove the last two bolts holding the trans to the motor and lower it down (must pull it away from the motor a little because there is two dowel pins holding it on location.
Now pull it out from under the car and have a few more beers.
Piece of cake..

Oh and no, the converter will not fall off. Depending on the converter some of them lock onto the front pump and will need to be turned like 1/4 trun before it can be pulled out. Even the ones that don't "lock" on don't come of all that easy.
