If you can handle the downtime, you can have your stock bilsteins rebuilt, and they'll even do custom valving.

I went the QA1 route myself.

David,

My 88 had Koni Sports on it when I got it and I didn't like the harsh ride in town. I put KYBs on the car and it made a significant difference. Really a nice ride in town. I like to go out and drive some really twisty roads on the weekends and unfortunately the handling response of the KYBs was not up to that of the Konis which had spoiled me. I tried a set of new Z51 Bilstein shocks to match my Z51 and that has been the perfect balance for town and twisties for me.

If I were you, I'd consider having your Bilsteins rebuilt, but the KYBs are a very good option. I was not unhappy with them except when really pushing the car quite hard. In town they were excellent. For the price, the KYBs are a very good choice.

Default Replaced Bilsteins with KYB shocks

Last summer, I was running the Bilsteins that came with the 1990 car when I bought it used. The car was bottoming out terribly on the rural roads of Virginia, which have many dips. I replaced the old, worn-out Bilsteins with KYBs and the ride has made me feel like I was floating on a cloud, compared to the worn-out Bilsteins.

However, I did compare the Bilsteins with the KYB in a side-by-side examination, and I must admit that the Bilsteins seem to have thicker, heavier metal and rubber parts. Even the attaching prongs of the Bilsteins are heavier. Maybe the Bilsteins will take more abuse. But after my ticket for reckless driving, I'm very careful these days. -- Eric
