Default Head Porting Questions

What exactly does each stage represent when I read about stage I , II, III porting? And are all stages the same regardless of who ported them. For example would Stage II heads from Exotic Muscle be the same as Stage II heads from AFR ?

They would likely be similar, but not identicle. You should request flow sheets from any company you're looking at to get an idea of the amount of work being done, and also look at the parts being used, ie springs, retainers, valves, etc...

Usually, stage I is port matching and a little massaging, stage II is serious porting and stage III adds larger valves and other niceties. Here's a website with all the info you need plus a great company to do business with.

Default Exhaust Flow

Corvette Kid, those are some really strong exhaust flow numbers for an LT1. Did you have your heads independently flow tested, or are they the porters advertised numbers?

They are the actual numbers for my heads. This is with 2.00 intake and (I think) 1.60 exhaust valves. Bob puts a lot of emphasis on exhaust flow and velocity in both ports. Also, the exhaust ports are coated as well as the valves, chamber and underside of the intake which is also fully ported. Getting back to the exhaust, this is why I know that my current round port headers which block the top of the port are holding it back a good bit. This is soon to be remedied. Also I'm running thru full stock exhaust sans cats.

CKNC,Those flow numbers are stronger than the AFR 195cc competition ported LT4 heads. You should be putting out some strong hp/tq #'s.

I remember your dyno #'s being pretty weak. Did you get your tuning/exhaust problems worked out?

Okay, I looked up my actual numbers again 339.6 HP at 6200 and 324.5 TQ. Now Bob at PP&C swears that my crappy headers could be costing as much as 20 HP, we should know in a few weeks. My spark started breaking up a bit at about 5800 but I think new plugs have cured that. They had been run with a stock tune for over 7K miles, since I built the bottom end.and really looked sickly when I pulled them out after running with the new top end for a while before tuning. Also, I'm running a fairly light reciprocating assembly which I believe would reduce torque a little. But that's okay, not a problem! Makes me REAL glad I didn't build a stroker now! For a mostly street car I already can't hook it up even from a roll at lower speeds w/o DRs and I'm going to a larger size of them. For the combination of power, mileage and drivability I was looking for I'm very pleased. Immediately after tuning I took it on a 1,000 mile trip and achieved 25 MPG at 70+ MPH and this is with a bad O2 and before the plug change.

Chris, Do those HP numbers translate to about 420-425 at the crank then, assuming about 20% loss? Is that about what you expected?

I think it figured to about 408 at this time. Hoping for 420s when all is said and done. And yes Tanker, I'm sorry to report to you that they are Hedmans. I had them lying around and needed to get something on it to get it tuned. Last spring when I was building the bottom end, I had some Stainless Works headers there. Beautiful pieces but unfortunately, the right side one exited right into the side of my A4. I eventually sent them back for a refund and they keep telling me to call back in another month and they'll have gotten an automatic car in to work out the problem. It's always another month and I've grown weary of waiting so in a few weeks I'll have some EMs to install. When that GP came up again I decided it was now or never. Damn the credit card, full speed ahead!
