Hello everyone. I am having an alternator issue with my 91 C4. The alternator went out over the holidays. I changed it and as soon as I did I found the new (rebuilt AC Delco) alternator was not charging. I changed it and found the same thing with the second alternator installed. I had the second alternator checked before I installed and it was good and I had a new battery installed . Something is causing the alternators to burn out as soon as they are installed. I've experienced this problem in the past over the years. The car has always gone through alternators at a rate of approx. 1 every couple of years. In some instances, I ran across the problem of multiple alternators burning out as soon as they've been installed and in some instances I have not. I've had the electrical system checked out and the shop has never been able to figure it a problem. Has anyone ever experienced this? .
When I got sick of spending my lifetime replacing the Pep Boys alternators every few months under their lifetime warrenty, I got a alternator from http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/ and have never had any troubles since.
I had a problem that looked like an alernator charging issue that turned out to be a wiring problem. In my case the 10 gauge power wire from the alternator to the fusible link behind the battery was the problem. I replaced it and everything worked properly.
Have you put a multimeter on the alternator while it's running to see if it's making juice? Or are you just looking at the volt gauge in the car?
