Some folks say it can, but I found it much easier with the MC on the bench
The most arduous task is reninstalling the ring that holds it in (whatever you call it)
I wound up with using a plastic plug from my MC bench bleed kit that fit down into the spring while the shoulder was wide enough to hold the ring. with a C clamp, I gradually forced the spring and ring down into the cylinder( i used pliers to compress the ring in the bore)
Once I got the hang of it it was really quite easy! You will love this mod
