Tachometer prevents car from starting?

Tachometer prevents car from starting?
Ok Any help would be greatly appreciated, When i purchased my 85' vette the tach was not hooked up. i found the white wire and proceeded to plug it into the distributor, then when i went to start the car, it would only turn over and would not start. but when i unplugged the wire, it would start right up. can anyone tell me what the problem may be? i would really like for the tach to work, please let me know any possible solutions

are you sure thats the right wire???
in my tach exp.. i have found
green to tach side dist
red to 12v
black to ground
white to inst lighting..
maybe check this.. if ya short out the tach plug car won't start ..
