What is the performance difference between 1 5/8" & 1 3/4" Longtubes.
The engine is a modified 350 pushing just over 400 HP and 400 Torque.
Which car/gear/auto,etc? You're right on the borderline of the two. Unless you're running a high stall w/lots of gear, I'd lean towards 1-5/8. The minimal hp gain you make above 5000 rpm with the 1-3/4 wouldn't be worth the 20+-lbs. of torque that you'd have to sacrifice.
Like cams, it's always better to be a little conservative
You were running the holley systemax, right?

Correct on the SysteMax ll Kit. This is in my 84 Vette and I'm about to purchase a set of headers. I think I would rather have the torque than the HP. Getting off the line and up to speed is more important to me than trying to get to 200 MPH.
Does anyone know the improvement of Longtubes over the stock header that came with the 84.

This is a topic that will get real ugly real fast... but check out the link... http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=978171
Granted... this is only paper figures not real world figures... but it does make a bold statement.

The argument has gone back and forth so many times.... that my plan when shopping for headers is to focus on the manufacturer and quality of fit and finish first, and size second.
I can't speack to the 1 5/8 or to your choice of Hedman, but I just returned from the dyno with my 88 L98. Base line runs with no mods other than a 160 thermostadt was 211HP/304TQ. I then installed TPIS long tubes, ceramic coated 1/3/4, and the TPIS/flowmaster exhaust with out cats. I tossed the frisbee, cut the air cleaner lit, removed all the air pump hoses and connections, removed the screens and fins from the MAF and further modified the MAF with some of my ideas. I added an adjustable fuel preassure regulator, a heated O2, and an air foil ( yeah yeah I know) Second series of dyno pulls were at 247HP/330TQ. I was fairly pleased with the upgrade results, but had hoped toi break 250. Next is a dyno tune of the PROM, and then I am done for this year.
Don't know if this will help with your decisions, but I think it is fairly representative of the monor modifications that most start with and the results are documented.
Okey Dokey, Thanks for the reply's and link. Now that I have decided to go with 1 5/8", What is the general opinion of Heddman Headers?
I'm getting a set of their LT with somg tubes when I can afford it. I'm sure there's nicer one$, but they seem somewhat affordable. I just don't drive mine enough to justify spending 500+ on headers

Check out Hooker too. I've seen some instances where the fitment of Heddman left something to be desired. It wasn't a bad fit by any means... but anytime I have to massage a part to fit... it is dissappointing to me. On the flip side... I had Heddman's on my old 78 TA and they fit better than my friends who had Hooker... so take that as you will.
Where's CFI-EFI? These threads are like blood in the water to a shark, for him..... Myself, I've sworn off of them.

Bear in mind that the graphs are modeled for 434 cid engines. Also read the comments by both Ski-dwn-it and Corkvette, concerning their real world experiences with changing headers and 1/4 mile ETs on their 406 and 434 engines. The big numbers make the headlines. One must learn to pay attention to the whole graph and consider the engine operating range that is used most often and that is most important the their own needs. Also don't forget to scale things down to the size engine you're dealing with.
make sure you get them Ceramic Coated!!!
most companies don't really ceramic coat them. when they say they are coated they dip plate the outside with cheap metal!
this doesnt do anything! except peel after a yr! also alot dont even coat inside and out!
get the real ceramic coating!
I will ceramic coat any headers inside and out for $188.
this includes all preping, 3 yr warranty, and a limited lifetime rust warranty. !!!!!!!
this is the best price/guarentee out there!
please email me and let me know!
